There are occasional interruptions in the family saga to report on the historical events, including examinations of each side’s military readiness and strategy. The soap opera drama of the family’s story pulls the reader through, but Wouk includes much history. And both Pug and Rhoda are questioning whether they want to continue their marriage, or find more suitable partners. Victor’s Jewish daughter-in-law remains trapped in Europe, having delayed her return to the US in deference to her aged (and improbably naïve) uncle. Both sons are naval officers serving in the Pacific, while daughter Madeline remains at her job in New York (and the subject of a scandal that will surely ruin her reputation). It ends just after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the Henry family is facing not only a world war but considerable personal upheaval. This is a larger than life story to tell, and Wouk could not manage to finish it in just one volume (even though this book is nearly 900 pages long in original hardcover). It’s 1937 and he’ll have a front-row seat to history. Victor wants a battleship, but he’s been selected to serve as Naval attache in Berlin. Book # 1 in the Henry Family saga introduces us to Commander Victor Henry, his wife Rhoda, and their children: Warren, Byron and Madeline.

When a strange woman shows up outside our camp in the Wastes with monsters chained up to her RV, it feels like I’m the only one who actually wants to help them. This was my favorite part because it was the start of the mystery. My favorite part of the book was when the professor?s children were walking and saw something behind a tree. I like this book because after every chapter it leaves you wanting to read more and toward the end the mystery becomes clearer and clearer. I thought this book was very attention-grabbing. When Professor Carver told his children they were moving to the country they were exited because they always wanted to do something different, thrilling, and most of all go to the country. Giddings (the country man) heard that Professor Carver (the city man) could scare ghosts away. They are switching with city folks because Mr. This book is about a city family moving and switching houses with country relatives for a month because the country family says there is a ghost in their house. I just finished reading a very fascinating book called The Ghost of Windy Hill by Clyde Robert Bulla. "synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. In the meantime, we are enthralled by Mazzucchelli’s extraordinarily imagined world of brilliantly conceived eccentrics, sharply observed social mores, and deftly depicted asides on everything from design theory to the nature of human perception.Īsterios Polyp is David Mazzucchelli’s masterpiece: a great American graphic novel. Did Asterios do something to drive her away? What has happened to her? Is she even alive? All the questions will be answered, eventually. And we meet Hana: a sweet, smart, first-generation Japanese American artist with whom he had made a blissful life. When Catherine II died in St Petersburg in 1796 the world sensed the loss of the most celebrated monarch of Europe - something no one would have predicted at the birth 67 years before of an obscure German princess, Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst, later married off to the pathetic heir to the Russian throne. Sophie/Catherine had come to rule in her own right over the largest state in existence since the fall of the Roman Empire. Gabe is the exact opposite, being a successful surgeon, divorcee with two older kids. Jenny is much younger than Gabe and is considered a free spirited, lonely and troubled young lady. Jenny first meets Gabe at her brothers hospital bedside and they are both quite smitten with each other right away. This is the story of how Jenny and Gabe came to be. So when I was asked to review this novella Just Beginning I jumped at the chance. Last March I did a review of Theresa Rizzo‘s novel Just Destiny and that was one novel that stuck with me. Money and age differences mean nothing to Gabe as long as they have trust, love, and respect. There’s only one problem: their families are opposed to their relationship. But when beautiful, vivacious Jenny comes along, she breathes love and happiness into his lonely life. Gabe’s career as a successful doctor has left just enough time for his teenage children and little else. But when she falls for sophisticated Gabe Harrison, she has a chance to turn her life around…if she can keep her past a secret. Twenty-something Jenny Campbell’s life has been a series of screw-ups, and the latest one endangered her little brother’s life. Humanist and psychological portraits (the debt to Freud is immense and fully recognized) which one might wonder if they are totally neutral because of a very lively sensitivity. And author of biographies.Īre we talking about biographies, by the way, I’m not even sure – I’d rather talk about portraits. Above all, he is this “flying Salburg citizen” celebrated by his friend Romain Rolland, this Jewish bourgeois from a cosmopolitan Vienna who travels a lot, who writes even more and who becomes – once his PhD in philosophy in hand – poet, correspondent, essay writer, novelist. Sofia Coppola’s movie “Marie-Antoinette”, so sensitive, so human, may be based on the biography written by Antonia Fraser, but I can never help but see the connection between the work of Antonia Fraser and that of Stefan Zweig.Īnd if you have to read one and only one biography of Marie-Antoinette, then it shall be Stefan Zweig’s work, published in 1932.Įxceptional biographer, Stefan Zweig is not a historian. If we have to talk about Marie-Antoinette, then we have to talk about Stefan Zweig. |
